Speech Production Research Group

Realtime MRI (Recordings by Esther Kunay, IPS, and Jens Frahm, MPI Göttingen)

A particular research focus of the IPS is speech production at the interface between phonetics and phonology: we investigate how grammatical structures such as the syllable shape the movements of the speech organs and how this differs between languages. Conversely, we ask whether the physiology of the speech apparatus sets limits to linguistic diversity. Speech disorders and the role of auditory and somatosensory feedback in speech are also studied from an articulatory perspective. The IPS has been one of the world's leading institutes in speech production research for decades and has state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for acoustic and articulatory speech recordings.
